306 service indicator

I suspect something is very wrong with my 306′s service indicator. it
does not come on with the first turn of the ignition. But if I turn
the lights on with the ignition off the spanner lights up but with the
trip and odometer mileage.

Any ideas?

I thought that the service-interval screen appears on the *second* (ECU
check, fuel pump priming, etc) turn of the key, not at the first
    ‘accessories’ click.

It’s def not working right. It’s a diesel and at no setting of the key
switch does it come on with the miles to go for next service. There is
a wire trapped where it ought not to be – I can see it round the
steering wheel surround IIRC it is orange – one of these days I might
get round to having a look at it. Until then it will be a matter of
writing down the milage on a bit of paper like I did with my Mk I to
figure out when to service the beast.
