306 DTurbo 1997

I have bought one of these today and have noted a rumbling noise coming
from the front left of the car. It is hard to explain, almost like tyre
noise but just not. Similar to the noise you get with a flat tyre, just not
as strong or as loud. Sorry about the vague description but does this sound
familiar to anyone out there.

Many thanks

Can you give more detail about as and when the noise happens.  i.e does it
get louder as you go faster.

Wheel bearing?Does it change pitch as you rock the wheel gently at 40
    mph?

This noise happens at most speeds. Especially however at 40mph or above. The
pitch does not change when i rock the steering.

One other question i have. Is it normal for the power steering to let out a
noise (like air escaping) when turnng at all times.

    Thanks

power steering ‘air escaping’ thing-could be the pump is knackered.

jack that wheel up, put a bar under the wheel and lean on the bar….on &off
with your other hand on the top of the wheel-feel for any ‘knocking’. also
do it with just your hands….rock the wheel vertically (1 hand on top, other
    on the bottom&push/pull).

there shouldn`t be too much play when you do this…bout 1-2mm movement max
(allows for heat expansion) but check autodata, or haynes manual or
    something.

if it’s it got excess play when you do this, spin the wheel by hand, and put
your ear to the wheel bearing-see if it’s making a noise (it shouldn`t do).
    if so-new wheel bearing.

if your adjusting the wheel bearing, remove it first, and rotate it in your
hand while pushing on the bearing…any roughness and it’s f*cked.
