Smoking 205 1.9 GTI

Hi,

I am looking to get my 1991 205 1.9 GTI back on the road after 8 months, but
unfortunately it failed its MOT… the first thing it failed on was that the
rear bump stops were non existent… I don’t think they have been since I
bought the car 5 years ago to be honest…  I asked another test centre if
they were required and he could not find any reference to them in his guide
book, so told me they shouldn’t be a problem… is this correct???

Secondly (and I think more seriously), once the car has warmed up it
smokes… the emissions tests were fine, but the tester said it was blue and
failed it!!! :-( .  Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this, I
am hoping it isn’t piston/cylinder wear, but I am not holding my breath!

If this is the case, what would be the easiest/cheapest resolution… I’m
not much of a mechanic, but I don’t want to be stung on an expensive
rebuild, or engine swap unnecessarily!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

Paint Codes (205)

How do I find the paint code for a 205 (1991 Navy blue in case anyone
just knows)?

Also is there a decent online source of touchup paint once I know the code?

Thanks

306 Wheels

Could someone tell me what is the largest wheels  i can put on my phase 1 306 without having to do some archwork?

Height and depth dimensions would be useful.

What do other people have on their cars and what looks good, i can’t decide between 5 spoke or multispoke!!!

406 Key Problem

I have a ’98 406 TD, my key seems to have become unreliable as far as
operating the central locking is concerned. It will only lock/unlock
remotely 50% of the time. I have changed the batteries and cleaned the
contacts (as best I can) to no avail. My wifes key works fine. Is it a
‘known’ problem for the keys to become unreliable as far as central locking
operation goes? I’m betting that a new key will cost an arm and a leg.

Leaking Radiator – 205td

Hi,

I damaged the radiator on my 1991 205 turbo diesel whilst changing the
starter motor. Currently it is leaking coolant into a bowl at about 100ml /
hour. Does the group suggest using something like Radweld or is a new
radiator required. Prices for the TD are expensive (unlike the other
models) – £100-£140.

In any case the coolant will be flushed. Does anyone know the ratio of
water/anti-freeze and the capacity of the cooling system? I have read that
changing the coolant is not trival, requiring bleeding as the engine warms
and adding coolant accordingly to avoid air pockets.

Thanks,

Clive

I have a 1998 406 1.9Tdi Estate.
The mileometer and trip meter are working ok but are not illuminated.
Does anyone know if this is easy to remedy or will the dash have to be
removed to rectify ?
Thanks for any advice,

Thanks Guys

Have had my 1966 405STI written off in a rush hour nose to tail. Cost of parts
in this part of the world made it uneconomic to repair even though the car was
still drivable.
Thank to all in this Ng over the last four years.I have been very grateful for
all the help and advice that has been so freely given, Especially G.T.
It has been a very pleasant experience owning a Peugeot with about 70000 k
driven in 4 years. Pity it came to such an abrupt end early one very wet
morning.

405 lock-out

Hi,

Thanks for taking the time to read this question. My problem is that I
recently purchased a 405 turbo diesel which had been laid up for some time
with its battery removed. On fitting a new battery, I found that the key fob
won’t operate the immobiliser alarm system, so that no amount of pressing
will open the doors. The key fob is definitely original to the car, and the
fob LED still comes on when the button is pressed, so the fob battery’s
probably OK. Will the key need to be reset to the alarm on the car somehow?
Any advice on how to do that would be very gratefully received.

Many thanks,

Philip Andrews
