Help on 405 running

My recently acquired 1990 405 sri is now going quite well, having given it a
good service and replaced some dodgy ball joints.
However, the engine runs well, but when just ‘cruising’ along tends to be a
bit ‘jerky’ or ‘hesitant’. Any ideas? Will try replacing dist cap etc..
(have already got new plugs).

Security Warning: Peugeot Stereos

There is a potentential security flaw with Peugeot Factory Fitted Stereos:

I bought a second hand 205 some months back and had to replace the battery.
As I did not have the security code for the factory fitted Stereo, I
telephoned the dealership who originally supplied the car, their name+number
being conveniently printed on both the number plate and tax disk holder. The
dealer had also conveniently fitted a window sticker with his details on it!

I explained to the dealer that the car had come from them new and that I
didn’t have the PIN for the stereo. I gave the dealer the registration
number and he gave me the PIN fot the stereo. Over the phone as simple as
that!!

What worries me is that:

1. They supplied the PIN over the phone. They didn’t ask my name. They
didn’t ask me to supply any information other that the registration number.
They didn’t ask to see any proof of ownership.

2. The PIN actually worked! No-one had ever bothered to change it!

3. There was nothing stopping a thief from stealing my "security" code
stereo and obtaining the code from the main dealer as their details are
plastered all over the number-plate, window sticker and tax-disk holder!!

Whilst I have no evidence to suggest that this was not an isolated incident,
I believe being cautious!

I WOULD , THEREFORE, STRONGLY ADVISE ALL PEUGEOT OWNERS TO CHANGE THE PIN
NUMBERS OF THEIR STEREOS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

power steering

Can anyone help. I have a 405 diesel estate with a problem on the
power steering. First start of the day the steering is very heavy to
the right only. Feels like no assistance. To the left it is always
normal. After a few miles it is perfect. I have changed the external
ram and there was no difference. That was 80 quid wasted! Someone
suggested to change the valve assembly but I don’t want to do that and
waste more money. I have heard about an additive to put in the fluid-
some sort of Teflon. Does anyone have any info on that. I definately
don’t want to buy a new rack at 400 quid!

Thanks

'87 205 1.9 Gti Fuel Grade

Hi,
I have just bought a 1987 205 Gti 1.9 – It’s a great motor, but I am
unsure if it will safely run on Unleaded Fuel. I have looked in the owners
manual and it says to run it on 4 Star petrol only. Does this mean I need an
unleaded petrol conversion or not?
Any Ideas?
Thanks,
Martyn

How do I remove 106 Radio/Cassette?

Hi,

The model 1010 radio/cassette in my 106 has some tape stuck in it so I have
to remove the unit from the car.

I can’t find any reference to removing it in any of the documentation.

Can anyone help, I don’t want to have to walk into a dealer and admit I’m an
idiot!!

All the best,

Henry

V6 woes

I recently had to replace a worn right side cam and rocker arms on my
’79 604 with the V6 motor. Not wanting to dish out for a new one, I
searched for a used one at salvage yards. I could not find one from
another Peugeot, but I found one from a Volvo. I inspected it very
carefully, including measuring it for lift with a mic versus the old
one. I also looked very closely at the valve imings and they looked to
be spot on. It didn’t occur to me to check the timing with a degree
wheel but I was confident that the cams were the same.

After installing the cam, double and triple checking the timing versus
the crank and the left hand cam, and adjusting the valves to the factory
specs, I fired it up. As soon as it started a loud clatter came from the
side with the newly installed cam. It sounded like a very loud deisel. I
rechecked my timing and valve clearances but the noise persisted. I have
been unable to find the fault.

The car has the following symptoms:

1) The noise is not apparent until the motor fires. No noise can be
heard while the starter is cranking.
2) There has been no loss of power. The car runs fine.
3) There has been no loss of compression. I would think if the valves
were hitting the pistons, a degree of impact making noise this loud
would be damaging enough to bend the valves and cause a loss of
compression.
4) The noise is the same hot or cold.
5) The cam and rocker arms are getting plenty of lubrication.

Any suggestions? Are these cams timed differently? I know the Volvo was
fuel injected and my car is carburated. This may require different vavle
timing. Any other ideas on what the noise could be?

Any input will be greatly appreciated. I love the car but this is
driving me crazy…

Thanks,
Vince
